The esports event at the 2021 Hanoi Southeast Asian Games kicked off on Friday (13 May) with the group stages for the Men’s League of Legends: Wild Rift and Free Fire competitions.

Thailand and Vietnam are in the lead for Wild Rift after sweeping their matches for the day while Indonesia came out on top in Free Fire.

Men's League of Legends: Wild Rift

For the first day of Wild Rift’s Group Stage, the teams of the seven participating nations were split into two groups.

Host country Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, and Laos comprised Group A while Group B featured Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The top two teams of each group will advance to the Final Stage.

Laos had an unfortunate start to the event, with the team eventually not playing in the Men's Wild Rift event. All of the teams scheduled against them in Wild Rift got an automatic win as a result.

Vietnam then dominated Group A with a 3-0 record from wins over Singapore and Myanmar as well as the default win over Laos. Singapore sit in second place with a 2-1 record, leaving Myanmar in third place with a 1-2 line.

Thailand led Group B with a 2-0 record, beating Malaysia and the Philippines. Malaysia defeated the Philippines in their own match to notch a 1-1 record, with the latter down 0-2 as a result.

While there will be one more day of Group Stage competition on Saturday (14 May), it's looking like the Final Stage of Men's Wild Rift will feature Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.
