SEA Games 2019 Esports Day 2: Singapore and Vietnam pick up first esports medals

The esports component of the SEA Games 2019 continued on 6 December as teams from Southeast Asia battled it out across different genres of esports titles in Manila at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Yahoo Southeast Asia looks at the results from Day 2 of the event, where the finalists for Mobile Legends, Starcraft II and Hearthstone were decided.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Singapore’s EVOS Esports and Vietnam’s VEC Fantasy Main first competed in a tiebreaker after drawing level in second place in Group A on 5 December.

Vietnam won the game and advanced into the playoffs, earning the right to face Sibol from The Philippines.

The top leaders of both groups, Malaysia’s Team Bosskur and Team Indonesia, faced each other in the upper bracket finals. Team Indonesia won 2-0, advancing into the grand finals and are guaranteed either the silver or gold medal.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s VEC Fantasy Main and The Philippines’ Sibol faced each other in the lower bracket semi-finals after securing 2nd spot in their groups respectively. Sibol won 2-0 and shall face Malaysia’s Team Bosskur on 8 December right before the grand finals to decide who moves to face Team Indonesia.

Starcraft II

In the RTS game Starcraft II, The Philippines’ Caviar Napoleon “EnDerr” Acampado edged Vietnam’s Tran "MeomaikA" Hong Phuc 3-2 in an extremely close upper bracket final.

Acampado shall face Singapore’s Thomas “Blysk” Kopankiewicz in the grand finals on 10 December.

Kopankiewicz had to compete in the lower bracket, coming up against Vietnam’s Tran "MeomaikA" Hong Phuc in the lower bracket finals, after beating fellow Singaporean Toh “Lobo” Wei Liang Alvin earlier in the day.

Kopankiewicz won the game against Tran 3-1, thus securing either the silver or gold medal for Singapore, while the Vietnamese player would become the first esports medal winner of the SEA Games with the bronze.

Hearthstone

Over in Blizzard’s card game Hearthstone, Malaysia’s Weng Kean “wkyew90” Yew secured a spot in the grand finals to face Thailand’s Aukit “Patoyao” Kittikrairit, after defeating Singapore’s Chew “Khaius” Khai Kiat 3-1 in the lower bracket finals.

Chew got himself the second bronze medal handled out in the esports component of SEA Games 2019, and Singapore’s first esports medal in the SEA Games.
