‘Scary’ Marcus Rashford told to ‘target’ goal haul no Man Utd player has reached in a decade
Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford “should be targeting” at least 30 goals this season, according to former England striker Michael Owen.
Rashford continued his incredible scoring form with another two goals against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
The England international has now scored in seven consecutive home games for the Red Devils and was also on target last week against Barcelona in the Europa League.
This is the best run of form Rashford has enjoyed in his career, and it comes not long after he looked like his time at United was up.
Last season was extremely difficult for the 25-year-old, who struggled in front of goal under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and Ralf Rangnick, leading to reports that he could leave the club.
Erik ten Hag is bringing the best out of Rashford, who goes into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United full of confidence.
Rashford’s double against Leicester was his 13th and 14th strikes in the Premier League this campaign, and his 23rd and 24th across all competitions.
The United forward discussed his form in front of goal after the 3-0 win at home to the Foxes.
“It’s still early in the season,” he said. “We’re fighting for a lot of different things and we have another big game in the week to hopefully go through to the next round of the Europa League and then a massive game for us (vs Newcastle).
“I don’t feel like slowing down and always want to improve. We have to just focus on ourselves, do as well as we can and keep picking up points.”
While Rashford is as humble as ever, former Red Devils striker Owen thinks a 30-goal season ‘should be the target’.
No United player has scored 30 goals in a season since Robin van Persie did so in 2012-13. In fact, the Dutch legend scored 30 on the dot, so Rashford is in a great position to eclipse that tally.
Incidentally, 12-13 was the last time United won the Premier League.
“He [Rashford] should be targeting 30 goals,” Owen told Premier League Productions. “Six [more] goals in the form he’s in.
“We’re only just past halfway, there’s still a lot of big games, and Manchester United are still in virtually every competition as well.
“It’s scary numbers we’re looking at and we’re looking at a player that we’re talking about at world-class level in years to come if he keeps this going.”
It is a huge week for the Red Devils, who host Barcelona on Thursday evening after drawing 2-2 in the first leg of their Europa League play-off round tie.
Then on Sunday, they face Newcastle at Wembley, looking to win their first piece of silverware since Jose Mourinho led United to Europa League glory in 2017.
