Saturday Night Live alums pop up all over the Oscars
At last fall’s Emmys, Saturday Night Live boasted a ubiquitous presence, from alums and stars such as Fred Armisen, Kate McKinnon, and Kenan Thompson appearing as special guests to “Weekend Update” anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost emceeing the night to SNL overlord Lorne Michaels serving as executive producer. And Sunday night on the Oscars, the SNL brand once again flexed its muscles.
SNL alums Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph presented the first few awards and wound up scoring some of the biggest laughs of the night with jokes about how they would host the show if it weren’t, you know, hostless. “Good evening and welcome to the one millionth Academy Awards!” quipped Fey. “We are not your hosts, but we’ll stand here a little too long so the people who get USA Today tomorrow will think that we hosted.”
Alums (and Wayne’s World stars) Dana Carvey and Mike Myers reunited to introduce the montage for Bohemian Rhapsody, and traded old catchphrases involving “spew” and “hurl.” (The duo, of course, famously lip-synced the crap out of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in Wayne’s World.) Former SNL writer (and host of the March 2 episode) John Mulaney co-presented an award with Awkwafina, and former SNL head writer Adam McKay was up for several awards as director of Vice. And unofficial cast member and member of the Five-Timer club Melissa McCarthy, a Best Actress nominee, presented the award for Costume design with Brian Tyree Henry whilse dressed like she was a cast member of The Favourite who fell into a pile of sticky bunnies.
