Satellite Images Show Damage to Historic Havana Hotel Following Deadly Gas Tank Explosion

Satellite imagery released by Maxar Technologies shows damage to Hotel Saratoga, a historic hotel in central Havana, following a gas tank explosion on May 6 that killed at least nine people, Cuban officials said.

On Friday afternoon, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited victims of the disaster in hospitals and later said the gas tank explosion was accidental.

According to Maxar, the images of downtown Havana were captured in the aftermath of the explosion on Friday afternoon. A closer view of the hotel shows damage to the side of the building with piles of debris on the street and a crowd of people gathered near the hotel.

According to its Facebook page, the hotel had been slated to reopen on May 10 after being shut for two years due to the COVID pandemic. Credit: Maxar Technologies via Storyful
