A state of emergency was declared by Colorado Gov Jared Polis on Thursday, December 30, after winds that gusted up to 115 mph exacerbated wildfires that led to the sudden evacuation of thousands of residents southeast of Boulder.

Local officials ordered the evacuation of Louisville and Superior in Boulder County, amid what the National Weather Service described as “life-threatening” conditions.
