Sask. musicians Jake Vaadeland, Rooky Kamiz among top winners at BreakOut West in Saskatoon

BreakOut West — a four-day music industry conference, three-night music festival and home of the Western Canadian Music Awards — was held in Saskatoon over the weekend, with Rooky Kamiz and Jake Vaadeland among the big winners from the home province.

Other top winners of the awards presented Friday night include modern country legend Corb Lund and the splashy, high-energy Miesha and the Spanks of Alberta.

BreakOut West, which has celebrated western Canadian music for more than two decades, is hosted by a different western Canadian city each year. The 2024 event began on Wednesday and wraps up Sunday. CBC was a sponsor and co-presenter of the CBC Saskatoon Showcase.

Among the Western Canadian Music Awards announced were the 2024 specialty award recipients.

This year's Heritage Award went to acclaimed concert presenter Zandra Kaszas. Trailblazing Saskatoon venue Amigos Cantina received this year's Kevin Walters Industry Builder Award, and the 2024 Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee is groundbreaking Saskatoon rock/blues group Wide Mouth Mason.
