KUCHING, March 13 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry has announced that all major international tourism, trade conventions and sports events have been postponed effective today.
Its minister, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said today that the decision was made following the directive from the State Disaster Management Committee that all government and public gatherings involving more than 250 participants be postponed immediately to contain the spread of COVID-19.
“We had to make this difficult decision because the general health in Sarawak has become a priority due to the global COVID-19 pandemic,” he told a press conference at his office today.
Among the international events to be postponed are the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), Spartan Race extreme sport, Kuching International Big Bikers Fest, Kaul Festival in Mukah, Miri Jazz Festival, Kuching Jazz Festival, Borneo Kite Festival and Borneo Cultural Festival.
“We have only postponed… not completely cancelled the events and we hope the situation will improve in a month or two for the activities to be held,” he said.
