Sara Haines recounts 'mortifying' fangirl moment with Andrew McCarthy on “The View”: 'I was just really excited'

“I write our PR press 'cause she works with them, and I was like, 'Can you apologize for me?'"

Brat Pack superfan Sara Haines is still reeling from a behind-the-scenes encounter she had with Andrew McCarthy on The View.

The co-host sat down with executive producer Brian Teta for the talk show's Behind the Table podcast for a postmortem on Wednesday's episode with McCarthy, who was on hand to promote his Hulu documentary about the Brat Pack label, Brats.

“I had such an embarrassing moment," Haines recalled. "So the documentary is fascinating. It's nostalgic, it has all the music, all the movies you love. And the best part was you don't have to have been a part of the Brat Pack to learn the lesson of what [McCarthy] does in that documentary, about what you perceive as bad or powerful or scary."

Haines "was so gunned up," she said, "so I go backstage in commercial and literally told him all of that as fast as I could because I kept hearing them count down. He gets on the set, I talk to him again in the segment, then I talk to him the second the camera's off him. I'm watching the camera because I knew everyone would talk to him and I wanted to finish asking him a question. So I ambush him there. People are circling and we're getting a picture. I'm still talking to him."

When co-host Whoopi Goldberg appeared to chat, "I hadn't quite finished and it was like an awkward sentence, so I hovered." As McCarthy began to depart the stage, "I'm following him, and when he left, I got this like, heat," Haines recalled. "That was so mortifying. His body language was like, 'Girl enough.'" The ordeal prompted Haines to reach out to McCarthy's reps.

“I write our PR press 'cause she works with them, and I was like, 'Can you apologize for me? I just was really excited,'" Haines said. "And she was like, 'Don't worry about it. He loved what you had to say.' But I was like, not like she's gonna tell me, yes, super weird and socially awkward, girl, stop."

Haines had no shortage of compliments for the Brat Pack alum on the episode, where he discussed writing and directing the doc that looked back at the origins of the Brat Pack label and how it affected those in the group. In it, he reconnects with Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Jon Cryer, and Rob Lowe, among others.

"Why now? What made you do it now?" Goldberg asked of the doc.

"Well, I thought it would be good while we were all still ambulatory," McCarthy quipped. "In that vein, I turned 60 last year and my relationship to my past started to change. I looked back with more affection. The interesting thing about the Brat Pack is I hated it at first and now I've come to realize it's probably the biggest professional blessing of my life."
