San Antonio Zoo Honors Dead Animals on Dia de los Muertos
The San Antonio Zoo invited community members to remember and honor animals they have loved on Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, from November 1 to 2, according to an announcement on the zoo’s website.
The announcement said this is the first year the zoo has created a community altar as part of Dia de los Muertos.
A representative of the zoo told Storyful it would be honoring several late, great animals, including Karen, an Asian elephant who died earlier this year. The representative also said guests are welcome to bring photos of their own deceased animal loved ones for the shrine.
This footage shared with Storyful shows the altar decorated with candles and framed pictures of beloved former zoo residents. Credit: San Antonio Zoo via Storyful
