Sacha Baron Cohen has responded to the much-talked-about scene with Rudy Giuliani in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Even before the comedy sequel had been released on Amazon Prime Video, the scene that features Giuliani and Borat's 'daughter' Tutar (Maria Bakalova) was already being reported on, with questions over Giuliani's behaviour in the scene.

It sees Giuliani in a hotel room expecting to be interviewed by Tutar about the Trump administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and ends with Giuliani following Tutar into the bedroom where she takes off his recording equipment.

Giuliani – who has since called the scene a "complete fabrication" – is seen lying back on the bed and appears to be putting his hands in his trousers when Cohen bursts into the room, saying she is 15 and "too old for you". (Bakalova, who plays Tutar, is 24 years old.)

Baron Cohen told Digital Spy and other press: "He said that he did nothing inappropriate, and I think this is a fascinating window into what the Trump regime deems is appropriate behaviour with women.

"What do I think of his reaction? I would say, 'Listen, I don't want to hurt the film. I really want people to see the film and what you see is what it is'. In the past, I've never, ever given any interviews as Borat, partly because my desire is I want people to take from the film whatever they want.

"I want people to come to their own conclusions and it's the same with the conspiracy theorists that I lived with. People will have their own opinions and their own moral judgements about every single person in the movie.

"Some of them will have moral judgements about me – and that's fine – but I think I'm always reluctant to take away from the viewing experience, so I would say that people should watch the movie and judge for themselves. I trust the audience and I believe in the audience."

Following the reports of the scene, Giuliani called the sequence a "complete fabrication" when responding on Twitter.

"I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar," he wrote.

Back in July, Giuliani told Page Six that he had foiled a prank played on him by who he later realised was Baron Cohen, calling the police after the incident.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video.
