The most polarizing debate in men’s grooming is how to properly apply cologne. It’s been a hotly discussed topic for decades and if you spend any time on Reddit, you’ll realize it goes much deeper than you could ever imagined. It turns out there are as many ways to apply cologne as there are stars in the sky or, at least, airplanes. Everyone believes that their way is the best, but what is the right way?

To settle the debate, we asked the handsome and generally well-groomed man Ryan Reynolds, who also happens to be the face of the new Armani Code Absolu cologne, how he does it. “I have to have a Northwesterly breeze coming in at ten knots, with Vivaldi playing on low, and I have to execute a perfect cartwheel through the mist,” he deadpanned.

“I just go for the core,” he clarified. Okay, so that doesn’t really settle much, except that Reynolds does wear cologne and if someone like him is just as lost as the rest of us, maybe that means there isn’t really a right way after all. We’d argue that putting on cologne is a personal choice, since the purpose of wearing cologne is to smell good, but also feel good. So if you’re spending time trying to figure out what to do, instead of just doing it, you’re defeating the purpose.

After all, take it from Reynolds himself, who says “there’s nothing that says signature more than a fragrance.”

Here are some of the most popular ways to apply cologne, all of which have been deemed the “right way” by some people. Where do you land on the debate? We’re firmly with Reynolds, waiting for that breeze to pick up.
