Ryan Reynolds admits he 'might have provided an assist' to leaking that famous “Deadpool” test footage in 2014

"I was Scottie Pippen. I was just there doing my job and someone else gets all the credit."

Ryan Reynolds has finally revealed whether or not he was the person who leaked that famous Deadpool test footage — and all it took was him literally being hooked up to a polygraph machine.

As the story goes, test footage of Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth was mysteriously uploaded onto the internet in 2014 after years of the superhero film languishing in production purgatory. The clip instantly caught the attention of Marvel fans, who quickly latched onto Reynolds’ performance. The result? Deadpool was finally given the green light two months later.

Over the years, Reynolds has repeatedly flirted with the idea that he was the one who posted the clip online. However, when his Deadpool & Wolverine costar Hugh Jackman asked him if he truly was behind the leak during a new Vanity Fair lie detector interview, Reynolds suddenly got evasive.

“That’s a great question,” he said. “This is a great question. Pass.”

A laughing Jackman then interrupted to remind Reynolds that he was currently hooked up to a polygraph machine.

“I just want to remind you that this does not follow the letter of the fucking law,” Reynolds shot back. “And if I wanted to break out of this room and destroy everything in my path, I will.” He continued, “I would say that I, I… what is the question again?”

Jackman then attempted to change gears before Lou, the person conducting the test, demanded that Reynolds answer the question before moving on to his next line of questioning.

"Well, for fuck’s sakes," Reynolds replied. "I mean, I might have provided an assist."

Lou declared that Reynolds’ response was truthful, surprising Jackman. Still, Reynolds appeared to suggest that while he may have been involved in the leak, he didn’t actually upload the footage.

“I was Scottie Pippen!” he claimed, referring to the NBA star who played alongside Michael Jordan in the Chicago Bulls. “I was just there doing my job and someone else gets all the credit.”

Reynolds previously admitted during a 2016 Tonight Show interview that it was “one of us” who leaked the footage — either him, Deadpool director Tim Miller, or writers Rhett Reese or Paul Wernick —  but he didn’t dig into specifics then.

"We all said at the beginning that someone should leak it," he said, "so the idea was planted, but I’m 70 percent sure it wasn’t me."

He celebrated the fourth anniversary of the leak on X (formerly Twitter) in 2018. “Still searching for the bastard who leaked our test footage onto the internet causing Deadpool to receive a green light,” he wrote at the time. “Taking over the investigation myself. #Angry.”

And on the leak's fifth anniversary, he showed off some of his ongoing detective work in a hilarious Instagram post that listed Jackman, Taika Waititi, and his wife, Blake Lively, as suspects.

"Investigation heading into year 5. Or as I call it, 'Phase 5,'" he captioned the image, nodding to Marvel's ongoing Phase 5. "The point is, I love conspiracy-yarn. #LeakAversary."
