Two Man Utd midfielders could leave if Erik ten Hag is successful in luring Mason Mount to Old Trafford, and a report has explained how Arsenal, West Ham, Newcastle and Brighton could benefit.

The future of Mason Mount is shaping up to be one of the most must-see transfer sagas of the summer. The 24-year-old is a two-time and reigning Chelsea Player of the Year. Mount is also homegrown, though is tracking to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and if talks with incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino don’t lead to an extension, an exit will be sanctioned.

Liverpool emerged as a credible contender to bring Mount up north. However, the Athletic claimed Man Utd is actually Mount’s preferred destination.

Today’s Transfer Gossip brought news of Man Utd brushing Liverpool aside in the race. The Red Devils are accelerating their move and have lodged multiple enquiries.

Now, a fresh update from the Sun has shed new light on the collateral that could come from Mount joining Man Utd.

The newspaper report both Scott McTominay and Donny Van de Beek could be ousted if Mount signs on the dotted line.

A Man Utd source told the Sun Van de Beek’s career in England is on a “knife-edge”. A Mount arrival would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and result in Van de Beek being sold back to mainland Europe.

But it’s McTominay who’ll be of greater interest, with West Ham, Newcastle and Brighton all in the mix for the Scot’s signature.

Newcastle are known admirers of the 26-year-old and their presence in next year’s Champions League could swing a deal their way.

However, Brighton are also a club on the rise and have qualified for the Europa League. West Ham will also be in the Europa League if they win the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina on June 7.

The Hammers are sounding out potential replacements for Declan Rice and if McTominay moves to West Ham, Arsenal would then be in the clear to push through a deal for Mikel Arteta’s No 1 transfer target – Declan Rice.

Per Sky Sports, Rice reportedly has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with West Ham that can see him leave if offers totalling £120m are tabled.

If West Ham are able to secure a suitable successor in the form of £30m-rated McTominay, they may be more willing to compromise on their gaudy asking price for Rice.

Mount in, McTominay, Van de Beek out?

A Man Utd source is quoted by the Sun as saying: “The club are keen to make Mason Mount a Manchester United player.

“They think he can come straight into the first team and make a positive difference to them. But they are not prepared to pay silly money and they have set the bar for what they will go to, to £60m.

“Mason is attracted to the idea of being able to link up with so many of his England colleagues like Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire. He has made it clear to his advisers that United is now the club he wants to go to and is pushing for the deal to happen.

“But Mason’s arrival would leave McTominay further down the pecking order and he’s at a stage of his career now where he wants to be playing every week.

“There are no shortage of clubs interested and although United are not necessarily keen to sell him, he is likely to try and push for a move to take the next step in his career.

“Newcastle and West Ham are at the front of the queue but Brighton could also be looking to bring in a midfielder and think they could use European football to tempt some bigger names this summer.”

The source added: “Van de Beek’s career at United has been on a knife-edge for a long time.

“Some at the club thought it could be rescued by the arrival of Ten Hag, who got the best out of him at Ajax.

“But it hasn’t worked out that way. Donny just hasn’t settled so he will move in the summer, most likely to Europe where he will look to rebuild and then go again.”
