Russians set fire to wooden tower at festival

Millions of Russians celebrate Maslenitsa, or Pancake Week, to mark the end of winter, which the Orthodox Church has accommodated as a week of feasting.

Maslenitsa week began as a pagan ritual and has been absorbed into the Russian Orthodox Chruch.

This year the tower, which was specially built for burning, was named "Vaccination Tower", in reference to the COVID-19 pandemic.
