Russian troops may have achieved a limited breakthrough into the eastern suburbs of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, according to a UK Ministry of Defense intelligence report released on X on June 12.

Intelligence notes that the Russian army could also take control of Ivanivske, located southeast of Chasiv Yar.

Fierce fighting continues in urban areas, with Ukrainian Armed Forces trying to halt the Russian advance.

The Russians remain on the eastern side of the canal running through the city, hindering their advance, according to the British Ministry of Defense.

“There is a high probability that Russian Armed Forces are advancing through the suburbs using infantry, and that the level of losses among the Russian military is very high,” British intelligence noted.

Intelligence also reported Russian artillery strikes on Chasiv Yar using thermobaric munitions.

The British Ministry of Defense explained that the city is valuable to Russia because of its strategic location on a hill and its use as a logistics hub for their Armed Forces.

On June 11, DeepState reported that Russian troops seized Ivanivske in Donetsk Oblast. Subsequently, Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Troop Grouping, denied this information, stating that the village is under the control of Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Situation in Chasiv Yar sector

Russia's top military leadership tasked its soldiers with capturing the town west of Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, by May 9, according to Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who made the statement back in April.

The enemy is focusing its efforts on breaking through the defense to access the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal, aiming to create conditions for further advancement toward the Kramatorsk area.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on April 10 that, in an attempt to reach Chasiv Yar, the Russians are using tactics similar to those that helped them capture Avdiivka. Ukrainian defenders' positions are being heavily bombarded by guided aerial bombs and fire from warplanes and helicopters.

If the Russians succeed in capturing Chasiv Yar, they will launch offensives against Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, and Slovyansk, according to the Ukrainian military.

General Syrskyi confirmed on April 28 that the situation at the front had escalated, with Ukrainian units withdrawing to the west of Berdychi, Semenivka, and Novomykhailivka.

The Institute for the Study of War reported on May 22 that Russia used the operation in northern Kharkiv Oblast to intensify a dangerous offensive on Chasiv Yar.

ISW reported on May 23 that Ukrainian Armed Forces recaptured some positions in the Chasiv Yar area.

On June 6, the Khortytsia Strategic-Operational Group of Troops stated that the Armed Forces were in control of the town and were preventing Russian troops from advancing.
