Russian Ministry of Defence Says it Prevented Pirates From Hijacking Civilian Ship

The Russian Ministry of Defence said it prevented pirates from hijacking a civilian ship in the Gulf of Guinea area of the Atlantic Ocean on October 25.

According to the ministry, a Panama-flagged container ship sent out a distress signal when armed men attempted to seize the vessel, alerting personnel aboard the Russian anti-submarine ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov.

The civilians took shelter in the engine room while a marine unit in a Kamov Ka-27 helicopter flew to their aid from the Russian ship.

The Russian Ministry of Defence said the pirates retreated from the ship upon arrival of the unit, fleeing at speed toward the coast.
