Russian Alpinist Waves Ukrainian Flag Atop Mount Everest

Russian climber Katya Lipka unfurled a Ukrainian flag after reaching the summit of Mount Everest on May 24, and called for the release of Aleksei Navalny, a prominent Russian opposition figure and anti-corruption activist.

Videos filmed by fellow alpinist Ashok Lama show Lipka atop the mountain with a Ukrainian flag and a banner reading “Free Navalny.”

In an Instagram post shared on June 2, Lipka wrote that she “wished so much that the war would end… and that people would stop being killed.” Credit: Ashok Lama via Storyful
