Russell T Davies' new Channel 4 drama It's a Sin has received widespread praise following its premiere tonight (January 22).

For the new series, the Doctor Who writer gives his take on the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, telling the story of three friends who move to London as the epidemic unfolds.

Years & Years singer Olly Alexander stars in the five-part series, alongside Omari Douglas, Callum Scott Howells, and an all-star supporting line-up which includes Stephen Fry, Neil Patrick Harris, Keeley Hawes and Tracy Ann Oberman.

Following tonight's premiere, which teased the early stages of the epidemic, viewers soon took to Twitter to heap praise on the writing and performances.

One person tweeted: "#ItsASin is already so gripping. It's made me really think about the fact that I'm proudly bisexual and really want to know more. I'll definitely be buying some books and educating myself as much as I can on LGBTQ+."

Another wrote: "The cast of It's A Sin are all absolutely phenomenal, the soundtrack is spot on, and I bet this show will go down in history as one of the best, just you wait and see. Can't wait to see the remainder of the series."

"Well that was awesome, and we're in for an emotional rollercoaster aren't we," added another.

The first series of It's a Sin is now available to stream in its entirety on All4, or you can catch it weekly at 9pm on Channel 4.
