Royal news: William and Kate focus on climate in Boston despite race row and ‘Harry & Meghan’ trailer – live
Prince William and Kate carried out the second day of their US tour in Boston amid a royal racism row and the drop of a headline-grabbing trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix documentary.
The Prince and Princess of Wales visited Greentown Labs, the US’s largest clean-tech incubator, then Roca, a non-profit that works to counter urban violence, before inspecting projects to mitigate rising sea levels.
Their climate change-focused schedule culminates with Friday’s Earthshot Prize awards — founded by the Prince of Wales to inspire a new generation of climate innovators.
The trip has been overshadowed by a racism scandal that erupted in the UK while they were en route to Boston. Prince William’s godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, was forced to resign as a Palace aide after making offensive remarks to a British charity boss. Ngozi Fulani, of Sistah Space, Britain’s leading domestic abuse charity for Black women, detailed a “traumatic” encounter in which she was asked what part of Africa she was from.
Then early on Thursday, Netflix released the first trailer for an exclusive documentary series in which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tell their side of several tumultuous years in the public eye.

William and Kate strived today to turn the spotlight back onto the overarching crisis of climate change, and away from the latest round of royal scandals which threatened to engulf their first overseas tour since the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
From the moment the Prince and Princess of Wales touched down in Boston on Wednesday, their trip has been overshadowed by a new racism scandal out of Buckingham Palace, followed by Netflix’s slickly-timed drop of Prince Harry and Meghan’s Netflix show teaser.
Louise Boyle, senior climate correspondent for The Independent, reports on how the royal couple soldiered on with their planned engagements in Boston.

William and Kate shown how Boston is coping with rising sea levels
21:37 , Oliver O'Connell
The Prince and Princess of Wales’s final afternoon engagement involved learning about the significant climate challenges that Boston faces. William and Kate have travelled to east Boston to see the changing face of the city’s shoreline as it contends with rising sea levels.
At Piers Park, the royal couple are being shown the past, present, and future of Boston’s waterfront as guests of Mayor Michelle Wu. They are joined by representatives from key environmental organisations including Boston Harbor Now, Stone Living Lab, the Trustees of Reservations, and The Harborkeepers.
Innovative climate resilience solutions are being deployed to protect East Boston, an environmental justice community, from rising sea levels. Members of the community shared their experiences of the neighbourhood’s vulnerability to climate change-caused flooding and storm surges.
One aspect that will be highlighted to the prince and princess will be how transformative projects along the shoreline can best mitigate the risks of climate change while promoting equity among the diverse residents of east Boston.
Boston Harbor Now’s Stone Living Lab, which researches and tests nature-based ecological restoration solutions around Boston’s waterfront, is announcing an ambitious collaboration with Earthshot 2021 Finalist, Living Seawalls.
The company designs panels that mimic natural habitat formations like rock pools and mangrove roots that can be fitted to new or existing waterfront infrastructure to promote marine biodiversity. Two sites along Boston Harbor will have such panels installed in the coming months.

Charity boss says her authentic African attire led to ‘attack’ from palace aide

The Black charity boss at the centre of the latest royal racism row has said she felt her Rastafarian pride was under attack at the Buckingham Palace event that she almost didn’t attend because of the British Empire’s links to slavery.
Ngozi Fulani described her “auction block moment” — a reference to her enslaved African ancestors who were bought and sold from auction blocks by imperialists — prior to attending a Violence Against Women and Girls reception hosted by Camilla, the Queen Consort, on Tuesday.

The timing of Harry & Meghan’s Netflix trailer is so perfect, it almost seems deliberate
17:13 , Oliver O'Connell
In a new comment piece, The Independent’s Louis Chilton writes:
“Netflix’s documentary has long been teased as Harry and Meghan’s defiant rebuke to the suffocating influence of The Firm. But other than a few juicy specifics, it is unlikely to tell us too much more than what she has already disclosed, and what we should already know to be true. (Reports surfaced, for instance, that Harry and Meghan had sought to soften some of the documentary’s revelations out of respect for the Queen’s death).
“What it will do is chip away at the wall of impunity that has always surrounded the royals, piece by piece.”

Black reverend speaks of ‘legacy of colonialism’ at Earthshot opening
16:00 , Megan Sheets
Moments before Prince William took the stage for his first event on a royal tour in Boston, a reverend asked audience members to “consider the legacy of colonialism and racism”.
The Prince and Princess of Wales touched down in the US on Wednesday morning, kicking off their first foreign trip since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and first visit to the North American country since 2014.
Before the pair had even begun engaging in official duties, however, the trip centred around an Earthshot Prize ceremony became ensnared by a racism scandal involving members of the couple’s family in an incident at Buckingham Palace.
Echoing the tension of that ongoing row were the remarks about colonialism’s lasting legacy made by Rev Mariama White-Hammond at Boston’s City Hall on Wednesday, said just before Prince William was set to take the stage.
“The ways it has impacted people across the world and its connection, its deep connection to the degradation of land and our planet that we are all seeking to reverse,” Rev White-Hammond, who is Boston’s chief of environment, energy and open space, said.

Ngozi Fulani claims Lady Susan Hussey also touched her hair

Ngozi Fulani has said Lady Susan Hussey also touched her hair during the interaction at Buckingham Palace which resulted in the late Queen’s lady in waiting resigning from the household.
Fulani, of Sistah Space, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “We support women of African and Caribbean heritage who are affected by domestic and sexual abuse.
“Ironically, that’s the reason why we got the invitation, so the last thing we expected to happen was that race would become an issue.”
Describing the incident, she said: “I was stood next to two other women - black women - and she (Lady Susan) just made a beeline for me, and she took my locks and moved it out of the way so that she could see my name badge.
“That’s a no-no. I wouldn’t put my hands in someone’s hair, and culturally it’s not appropriate.
“But you consider that this lady is of senior years, I have to consider many things - is she OK?- and also my environment, and who I represent - Sistah Space - and so I was a bit taken aback.”

Ngozi Fulani stressed that the focus should remain on domestic abuse survivors rather than the race row and subsequent resignation of the late Queen’s lady in waiting.
Asked how she felt about Lady Susan Hussey’s resignation, the Black charity boss told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I want the focus to remain where it should be, which is on the women and girls who are affected by domestic abuse.
“Having said that, she’s influenced by Buckingham Palace, and it’s their decision and her decision to make, one that I had no part in.”
Asked if she would have preferred to accept Lady Susan’s apology instead of seeing her quit the household, Fulani said: “I would have preferred it did not happen.
“I would have preferred that I could go to a space where I’m invited and be treated as every other guest was treated.
“I would prefer that we kept the focus on the abuse against women and girls.”

She said: “Let us be clear what this is. I’ve heard so many suggestions it’s about her age and stuff like that. And I think that’s a kind of a disrespect about ageism. Are we saying that because of your age you can’t be racist or you can’t be inappropriate?
“If you invite people to an event, as I said, against domestic abuse, and there are people there from different demographics, I don’t see the relevance of whether I’m British or not British. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.”
She added: “Although it’s not physical violence, it is an abuse.”

Boston chosen as Earthshot host for two reasons

Prince William says there are 2 reasons they wanted to host the #EarthshotPrize2022 in Boston:
1) In JFK’s hometown… the former president’s Moonshot Speech was an inspiration behind the launch of #Earthshot.
2) Tech, innovation and research at startups and universities. @7News pic.twitter.com/OjupTF161A— Sam Bleiweis (@SamBleiweisTV) November 30, 2022

Nadine White, The Independent’s race correspondent, writes:
I’m not sure what it’s going to take for the royal family to confront and address its racism. Or if, indeed, that is even possible when it is founded on structures of supremacy and privilege.
