Royal Bride Who Made Headlines for Fainting at Wedding Is Pregnant with Her First Child
Princess Sophie hinted she wouldn't be able to make a special event because of her due date
There’s a royal baby on the way in Germany!
According to reports, Princess Sophie-Alexandra of Bavaria is pregnant and expecting her first child with her husband, Prince Ludwig. The couple tied the knot in a royal wedding in May 2023, where Sophie made headlines when she shockingly fainted during the church ceremony.
German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine was the first to report the news on Tuesday, saying Princess Sophie, 35, alluded to a pregnancy during a recent speech in Landsberg about the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals. According to the outlet, Sophie said that she wouldn’t be able to participate in her husband’s Lion's March fundraiser in September because it was near her due date.
"The speaker of the House of Bavaria, Carmen Schramka, said that congratulations and further information would be waited until the child was born. After all, pregnancy is a long process,” Augsburger Allgemeine reported, and Hello! magazine also reported the baby news.
A spokesperson for Princess Sophie and Prince Ludwig did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Prince Ludwig is in line as future head of the House of Wittelsbach, and a baby boy would follow him in the line of succession. The German royal is the great-great-grandson of King Ludwig III, the last King of Bavaria.
Though the monarchy dissolved in the German Revolution of 1918 following World War I, the Bavarian royal family has ceremoniously continued. Prince Ludwig studied law in Göttingen, Germany and spent much of the last decade in rural Kenya, where he's founded several non-profit organizations.
At the request of his cousin Duke Franz of Bavaria, the head of the House of Wittelsbach, he also carries out representative and honorary tasks in Bavaria, such as attending a reception with Crown Prince Haakon of Norway at the former royal residence in Munich during his official visit to Germany in November.

"A spokesperson confirmed that Princess Sophie fainted during the wedding this morning. After a drink, she was fine again and the ceremony continued," royal blogger ChristinZ tweeted at the time.
Quoting a guest, German newspaper Bild similarly reported, "'The bride fell backward, the groom caught her. The groomsmen rushed over. We are glad that she felt well again straight away.' "
The royal bride seemed to be in good spirits as she exited the church with Prince Ludwig and gave a wave to the crowds who came out to see them.
A celebratory reception followed at Nymphenburg Palace, hosted by Prince Ludwig's cousin, Duke Franz of Bavaria.

"Ludwig made a good choice. My future daughter-in-law is a very intelligent and educated woman," he told the German outlet. "I hope they start a family soon.”
