Roy Hodgson in hospital after being taken ill during Crystal Palace training session

Roy Hodgson has been taken to hospital after falling ill during a training session - amid rumours the Crystal Palace manager is set to be sacked.

The 76-year-old was due to hold a media briefing at 1.30pm this afternoon, but the news conference was abruptly cancelled.

Members of the media had already begun assembling outside the football club's New Beckenham training ground when they were informed the briefing would not be taking place.

In a short statement, the club said: "Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today's training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in hospital.

"Everybody at the club sends their best wishes to Roy for a speedy recovery."

There have been multiple reports that he will be replaced by ex-Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner.

Crystal Palace are currently 15th in the Premier League, five points above the relegation zone, having won just six of 24 matches so far this season.

Their two most recent matches have resulted in losses and on Monday, they suffered a 3-1 defeat at their home ground, Selhurst Park, at the hands of London rivals Chelsea.

Fans have made their disappointment known by holding banners calling for Hodgson to be sacked and venting about how the club is being run.

Crystal Palace's next game is against Everton at Goodison Park on Monday 19 February.

Hodgson is the Premier League's oldest manager and this is his second stint in charge at Crystal Palace.

He previously managed the south London club from September 2017 to May 2021, and he was then brought back last March, to replace his own successor, Patrick Vieira.

Meanwhile, Glasner left Frankfurt at the end of the 2022-23 season and the 49-year-old has been out of a job since.

The Austrian manager had led the side to a Europa League triumph in 2022, where they beat Rangers on penalties in the final.

Frankfurt finished eleventh and seventh in the Bundesliga in his two seasons in charge.
