Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly ‘expected back in England on Monday’ ahead of showdown talks with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
The Portuguese striker is yet to report for pre-season duty, missing the club’s tour of Australia and Thailand, citing family reasons.
He has not worked under new manager Ten Hag, who has always reiterated his desire to work with Ronaldo.
When asked for an update on the striker’s situation, the Dutch boss said: “Concerning is maybe not the right word. I focus on the players who are there and they are doing really well.
“They are in good shape and I have further focus on that and develop that. I cannot wait for (Ronaldo) to come in and then we will integrate him.”
The 37-year-old reportedly asked to leave the club earlier in the transfer window if United receive a suitable offer.
United have no desire to sell the former Real Madrid man, who does not have any concrete offers from elsewhere.
According to The Athletic correspondent David Ornstein, Ronaldo is ‘travelling back to England’ and is poised to have talks with the club about his future.
He is ‘expected to have face-to-face dialogue with Ten Hag in the coming days’, though it is ‘unclear’ if he will train with his teammates on Tuesday.
The Old Trafford club view his return as a ‘positive sign’. The report adds that it is increasingly likely the Portugal captain will remain in Manchester, however, there is a lack of ‘clarity’ about the situation.
United players did not train on Monday after returning from Australia. They have two more pre-season friendlies remaining before facing Brighton in the Premier League on the opening day of the 2022/23 season.
Ronaldo’s current deal expires in 2023, though he could stay beyond next summer as he has a further year option included in his contract.
While the experienced forward is keen to leave in order to compete in the Champions League, no club are in advanced negotiations with the Red Devils over a transfer.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Napoli have all been linked with Ronaldo, however, it is unlikely that any of these teams will make a move for the Portuguese.
A move to Atletico Madrid appears to be the most likely destination, despite the player’s affiliation with their city rivals, Real Madrid.
Ronaldo scored 24 goals across all competitions last season as United finished sixth in the Premier League and without a trophy for the fifth consecutive campaign.
