Fabrizio Romano has said “here we go” for two transfers that could have a negative impact on Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s plans.

United have made two signings so far this month, bringing in goalkeeper Jack Butland and striker Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season.

Further additions do not look likely with the club strapped for cash this month after investing heavily last summer

The acquisition of Weghorst has addressed a gaping hole in the squad after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

Although the Red Devils have brought in a new striker and goalkeeper, these two have come in on a short-term basis.

This means they might look to pursue different players in the summer.

United had been strongly linked with their former player Memphis Depay and Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

However, both players are set to join new clubs in the next few days.

This is according to reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has dropped his trademark line for both players’ transfers.

Memphis will leave Barcelona for La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid for a measly ‘€3/4million’ and will pen a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The Netherlands international’s Barcelona contract is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he would have been available for nothing.

Having said that, he was clearly available for a very small fee, so if United wanted him, they probably could have made the deal happen; although Premier League tax is definitely a thing and it definitely would have been applied by the Blaugrana.

Reports have suggested that it was the player’s camp pushing for a return to Old Trafford, as opposed to Ten Hag and/or the club seeking a deal to bring Memphis back to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old spent 18 months at United after joining from PSV for around £30m.

It was a bitterly disappointing spell, with Memphis joining Lyon in January 2017 for half the price the Red Devils paid to sign him.

Memphis is a versatile forward who can offer a lot to many teams, including United and Premier League leaders Arsenal, though his wage demands would surely be very hefty.

Sommer, on the other hand, could have been a terrific pick-up on a free transfer in the summer.

However, the experienced Switzerland goalkeeper is set to join Bayern Munich – who need a replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer.

Sommer will join for a very respectable price, though with his contract six months from expiring, the reported ‘€8m plus €1.5m add-ons’ may be seen as a little bit steep.

Bayern are getting a superb goalkeeper, however, which will boost their chances of winning the Champions League.

Like Memphis, the 34-year-old will sign a deal lasting until the summer of 2025, Romano confirmed on Twitter.

United are hoping to sign a new goalkeeper to compete for David de Gea’s No. 1 shirt.

Sommer would have been someone capable of replacing the Spaniard as Ten Hag’s first-choice ‘keeper, which is certainly a position the Dutch manager needs to address.
