Romanians paint eggs for Orthodox Easter

STORY: Donned in traditional Romanian folk costume, people used dotting and scraping tools to add colourful accents to the hard shell of the eggs.

The traditionally engraved eggs were on display at a village museum in Bucharest where young visitors were able to try their hand at the painting techniques themselves.

"As my daughter here discovered, it is very difficult, you know, it is absolutely gorgeous, the eggs. But, it takes a lot of practice and time, for sure," said Justin, a visitor to the museum, from Washington D.C.

"It is such a simple art, but so beautiful," Susette from Boston added.

Although the ornamental details vary from one region to another, all of the elements on the decorated eggs have meaning.

While some represent life and death, others reference time and knowledge.
