Rob Lowe’s Unstable Cancelled at Netflix After 2 Seasons
Netflix is killing Ellis Dragon’s political aspirations, cancelling Unstable after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.
The show’s eight-episode second season dropped on Aug. 1, ending with Lowe’s character going full Donald Trump — first by opening a half-baked “school,” then by announcing his candidacy for president. Like, of the United States of America.

“Why not pull from some of the most hilarious things that have happened in the zeitgeist over the past few years?” the show’s star and co-creator (and Rob Lowe’s real-life son) John Owen Lowe tells TVLine. “I also just genuinely believe that this is something Ellis would do, and it makes us laugh so hard. If you’re drawing comparisons to real life, you’re probably not wrong.”
And before you go dismissing Ellis’ sudden political aspirations as a passing fancy, Lowe reminds us: “There have been many people in the past that I didn’t think had a shred of a chance that have ended up becoming president. Anything is possible, and I think it’s a very funny premise to explore, having Ellis in an even more powerful position and Jackson by proxy being forced into his orbit even more.”
In the political arena, Lowe imagines that Ellis would refer to Jackson as the “first boy,” even suggesting that Ellis would propose a “first children” debate instead of a standard presidential one.

The workplace comedy starred Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, the CEO of biotech company Dragon Industries; John Owen Lowe as Jackson, Ellis’s helplessly co-dependent son; Sian Clifford as Anna, Dragon’s prickly CFO; Aaron Branch as Malcolm, Jackson’s co-worker-turned-roommate; and Rachel Marsh and Emma Pilar as Luna and Ruby, two of the company’s top scientists.
Fred Armisen also heavily recurred as Leslie, who became Ellis’ live-in therapist after he kinda-sorta kidnapped him. Lamorne Morris joined the cast in Season 2 as a biotech prodigy named Peter, along with Iris Apatow as a new intern at Dragon — and a love interest for Jackson.
