Roadrunner, Concert Venue With Jonathan Richman-Inspired Name, Opening in Boston

As the concert business continues its gradual return to health after being flattened by the pandemic, it’s inspiring to see new venues being announced — and one in Boston named after a classic song by Jonathan Richman is the icing on the cake.

AEG-affiliated Bowery Presents, the Northeast-based concert promotion and venue management company, has announced that the 3,500-capacity venue Roadrunner, named after Richman’s classic song first released in 1975, is scheduled to open at Boston Landing in Spring 2022.

Located at 89 Guest Street in the city’s Allston-Brighton neighborhood, the 50,000 square foot venue is currently under construction.

“The Bowery Presents has always focused on creating and operating venues where both fans and artists alike can have a great experience,” said Josh Bhatti, Vice President and head of the Boston office of The Bowery Presents, regional partner of AEG Presents. “From unobstructed sightlines to state-of-the-art sound, plus easy access to bars and restrooms, we’re confident that Roadrunner will join The Sinclair as a beloved concert venue in Greater Boston, delivering on our commitment to keep the music first.”

The lyrics to the song, of course, are an ode to the Boston area, with Route 128 and other local locales getting a mention.

“To us, the song ‘Roadrunner’ so authentically belongs to Massachusetts and this new venue. There’s a reason why it came close to becoming the official state song: it’s transportive while still unifying people,” continued Bhatti. “We could not be more excited to welcome in fans next year.”
