  • Riverdale production was shut down in March due to the coronavirus.
  • Because of this, the fourth season has been cut short and will air its season finale on Wednesday.

Ever since Riverdale shut down its production due to the coronavirus, fans have been wondering what would come of the remainder of season four. Well, we now know that the season will be cut short and the finale will air of Wednesday after only a 19-episode season.

Originally, the season was supposed to have 22 episodes, but when production stopped, they were in the middle of filming ep 20, so they were forced to end on 19, which just so happened to be directed by Mädchen Amick, who plays Alice Cooper on the show.

Because of this, a lot of plots seem like they will be left unaccounted for. As we know, both Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols are leaving the show after this season, but Mädchen told Entertainment Weekly that she doesn't address their departure in the episode. That being said Mädchen doesn't think this is the last we will see of Skeet's FP or Marisol's Hermione. "I also know Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa, the show's creator] really loves Skeet and Marisol, and he told me he hopes their characters can come and go from the show depending on everyone’s availability," she said.

On top of that, while everyone's waiting to see what's going to happen when it comes to the relationship between Betty's half-brother Charles and her fake half-brother Chick, that won't be part of the finale either. "We hadn’t gotten into that for my episode," Mädchen explained. "I think that was in the next few."

According to Mädchen, the episode will revolve around the kids and Principal Honey, whom they've been fighting with all season. "There’s a mixture of some fantasy of what they want to do to Mr. Honey and some reality of what ends up happening to Mr. Honey," she said.

Of course, this does bring up the question of what season five will look like. There were rumors that the show would include a time jump, skipping over college and starting four or five years in the future next season. Mädchen even confirmed this in her interview with EW. The show's updated schedule, though, could affect this, if season five has to start by playing catch up on what was missed at the end of season four.

There is some good news in all of this, though. Like the fact that since Riverdale is ending earlier, that means season four will show up Netflix very soon. In fact, you can watch all of this season on the streaming service on May 14th.
