Rio de Janeiro celebrates return of carnival

STORY: Brazilian samba schools' dancers, musicians and floats paraded through the world-famous stadium as spectators cheered on.

"Today is the day to go over the top and the day to play, to laugh and cry of happiness," said 43-year-old Patricia Barros, of the Em Cima da Hora samba school.

"It's as if it was the first time, once more after so many years," 27-year-old Cubango Samba School member Michele Campos told Reuters.

The parade competition is one of the top attractions of the annual Carnival celebrations that sweep the city every year and each samba school is made up of a regiment of dancers, drummers and divas.
