The new season comes more than a year after Season 4 wrapped (in May 2020). It will continue to follow the sociopathic genius scientist Rick (voiced by Justin Roiland, who also co-created the show and serves as an executive producer) and his timid grandson Morty as they travel through the universe on insanely dangerous adventures. Some of these adventures in Season 5, as glimpsed in the trailer, which you can watch below, include zip-lining through futuristic metallic tunnels, “‘Blade’-ing” and touching Rick’s stuff.

The series, which was also co-created by Dan Harmon, also stars Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell and Spencer Grammer.

In order to more fully celebrate the show’s return, “Rick and Morty Day” is designed to be a full 24-hours of access to special content from the show. The network is promising “sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes footage and special surprises across TV, digital and social,” in order to kick off the premiere of the new season.

“Rick and Morty” falls under the Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics (GKYAC) banner, which has a mission of being the premiere global provider of kids, family, young adult and classic content and brands. Said content is currently distributed in more than 190 countries, with the division’s networks in 500 million homes, delivered through more than 65 channels and in 31 languages.
