Rich Homie Quan, 'Type of Way' and 'Flex '(Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)' rapper, dies at 33

The Fulton County Medical Examiner says it has scheduled an autopsy.

Rich Homie Quan, the platinum-selling Atlanta rapper known for such hit songs as "Type of Way" and "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)," died Thursday at 33.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner said in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly that it had been notified by Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital of the death of Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar. A cause of death was not disclosed.

"The cause and manner of death are pending the completion of laboratory studies and microscopic examination of tissue slides," states a press report released on Friday following an autopsy.

The medical examiner also confirmed his reported date of birth as Oct. 4, 1990.

Quan's family told TMZ that they were "shattered and heartbroken by his sudden death."

Born in Atlanta in 1990, Rich Homie Quan began his music career after a short stint in jail and broke onto the scene with "Type of Way" in 2013. "I never saw myself going this far with music," he told XXL in 2014. "Music was just a hobby at first. I never saw myself being on stage and rocking out shows. After I got out of jail, I started to take it more serious, and that's when my dream came true."

Quan's other notable tracks included 2015's "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)," which became a viral TikTok dance trend, and "Ride Out," which was part of the Furious 7 soundtrack.

Quan collaborated with Young Thug and became a leading member of the Cash Money Records side project Rich Gang, and also worked with rappers 2 Chainz and Jacquees.

He released what would be his final EP, Family & Mula, in 2022. Quan is survived by his four children.
