What was revealed in videos found on the bodies of Wagner mercenaries in Mali

Tuareg rebels in Mali said that they killed 84 mercenaries from the Russian private military company Wagner Group between July 25 and 27 during clashes with the Malian Armed Forces, who work with these mercenaries. The Tuaregs claimed that they obtained videos from cellphones and GoPro cameras left on the Wagner men’s bodies, which they then posted on social media.

Fighting broke out between Tuareg rebels and their enemies, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA), on July 25, 2024 in Tinzawaten, a region in northern Mali near the border with Algeria. FAMA soldiers were working with combatants from the Russian private military organisation Wagner Group, also sometimes referred to as the Africa Corps in these contexts.

Ultimately, the ambush was effective and the rebels defeated FAMA and the Wagner mercenaries. CSP rebels claimed that 84 members of the Russian military group were killed. In a post on Telegram summarizing the fighting, the Wagner Group admitted that they had to withdraw after the ambush. The group also said that a commander named Sergei Shevchenko, nicknamed “Prud”, had been killed in the fighting.

“Nikita ‘Belyi’ Fedyanin died in combat on July 27, when our men fell in an ambush held by enemy combatants,” the post read.
