KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) – To this day, fighting against the communists which left a fellow comrade wounded was an unforgettable experience for former chief of defence force General Tan Sri Zulkifli Zainal Abidin.
Zulkifli said at that time he was serving as a young Lieutenant and had been assigned to fight communists from 1979 until the communists put down their weapons in 1989.
“During that period almost 250 soldiers had been wounded across the country, but many of the people today are unaware of the struggle against the communists.
"I am confident that the veterans who have fought for the independence will not allow the same thing to happen to the country," he told reporters after attending the 20th PAT Appreciation Parade ceremony at the Dataran Panglima Tentera Darat at the Sungai Besi Perdana Camp, here.
Therefore, Zulkifli said the community should not be fooled or influenced by any party trying to implement negative elements like the Communist Party of Malaya (PKM) and other issues.

"I'm convinced that veterans are also worried that the same (communist influence) might recur if it is not addressed positively," he said.
At the same time the 61-year-old Port Weld, Perak native also expressed gratitude for the implementation of the Defence White Paper, which he said implied that all parties would play an important role in defending the country's security and sovereignty.
"This white paper also needs to be embraced as it will be the starting point for all to unite and never make trivial statements," he said.
Meanwhile, the appreciation parade was held in the highest honour for Zulkifli’s services and his four decades of sacrifice in the team. He will begin his vacation tomorrow
The parade involved 17 officers and 462 members of the three branches of the Malaysian Armed Forces led by the Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, Lt Col Khairul Azman Korma.
Zulkifli was appointed as the 20th chief of defence force on June 20, 2018 and has been replaced by General Tan Sri Affendi Buang, former Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Commander, effective today.
