The incident took place at a restaurant in Stowe Township, Penn., on Saturday
A restaurant owner has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after shooting a teenager who attempted to steal a tip jar, say police.
Mohammed Hamdan, 39, was arrested after he fired multiple shots at a 15-year-old male who entered his restaurant in Stowe Township, Penn., on Saturday, the Allegheny County Police Department said in a statement on Facebook.
The teenager was seen in surveillance footage entering the establishment and giving his order to Hamdan at the counter. He then reached over and grabbed a tip jar before he turned around and walked to the exit, police allege.
Hamdan then allegedly reached for his pistol and fired “at least three rounds” at the teenager, say police.
Authorities were notified of the shooting at approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Those initial calls were followed up with a call from the teenager’s mom who said her son had been shot “several times,” according to the police report, per WTAE.
The outlet, citing authorities, reported that the teen had two gunshot wounds in his right forearm and one in his right shoulder blade that fractured a bone. He was sent to UPMC Children’s Hospital for his injuries.
“He is listed in stable condition. After reviewing surveillance recordings and speaking with witnesses, detectives found no evidence to suggest the male was armed or threatened Hamdan at any time,” the police statement said.
“Detectives consulted with the District Attorney’s office who approved charging Hamdan with aggravated assault. Hamdan was taken into custody this morning and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail pending his preliminary arraignment.”
Hamdan informed investigators following the incident that the teenager had come into his restaurant with his brother earlier on, causing him to “expect them to try to steal from him,” according to the police report, per WTAE. An investigation is now ongoing.
Hamdan has since been released following his arrest on non-monetary bail, reported CBS News. He now awaits a preliminary hearing, which will take place on December 5.
