Republicans claim fraud despite Trump's re-election
Despite Donald Trump’s clear victory, Republican social media users have been claiming that fraud sullied both the 2024 and 2020 United States presidential elections. Strangely, they have in some cases recycled the same claims made by conspiracist Democrats who believe Trump’s re-election was down to fraud.
Baseless claims of election fraud made by Republicans on social media, and reused during the campaign – especially by X owner Elon Musk – haven’t slowed down, even after Republican candidate Donald Trump won the election. From identity fraud to missing votes, we take a look at some of the most widely spread false claims.
'Kamala Harris only won states where voter IDs weren’t verified': FALSE
On November 10, Republicans started claiming on social media that Vice President Kamala Harris only won in states where voter IDs weren’t checked. They were implying that some of her votes were cast by undocumented migrants. To prove it, Trump supporters shared a map broadcasted by American television channel Newsmax, which showed the states where Harris got the most votes along with the label “No ID”. Pro-Trump billionaire Elon Musk shared the same map on X – his post garnered more than 80 million views.
As the count continues, the difference in the number of ballots between elections keeps shrinking. As of November 11, 71 million votes had been attributed to Harris - six million more than what she was attributed on the graphic.
