Report: Kelantanese boy dies of heat stroke
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — An 11-year-old boy from Kampung Perupok in Bachok, Kelantan died of heat stroke last Tuesday, reportedly the first in the country. Muhamad Syamil Aqil died while receiving medical treatment for heat stroke and dehydration at a local clinic, Sinar Harian reported last night, citing the boy’s mother who wanted to only be known as Wanie.
“The doctor who treated him said his kidney and heart had been burnt. It was empty inside, the water and blood in his body had dried up,” Wanie was quoted as saying.
The Malay daily reported that a post-mortem examination was carried out at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital that confirmed the cause of the boy’s death to be from heat stroke.
Wanie recalled that her son was seen actively cycling on the first and second days of Aidilfitri last weekend but fell sick with fever and diarrhoea on the third day of the Muslim holiday last Monday.
“I monitored his body temperature once every hour, but it was not very high. Only around 37 to 38 degrees.
“On the fourth day of Hari Raya, after dawn, he looked weak. I then told my husband to bring him to the clinic, but he suddenly had cramps,” she was quoted as saying.
