Remains Found in N.Y.C. Garbage Chute Belonged to Missing 24-Year-Old Woman: Police

Authorities revealed Saturday that there's "no criminality suspected at this time"

A 24-year-old woman was found dead in the garbage compactor of a New York City building on Friday, according to authorities.

Jaclyn Elmquist, a resident of Brooklyn, was discovered "unconscious and unresponsive" in the basement of a West 28th Street Manhattan building on Friday, the New York Police Department has shared.

The discovery came shortly after police received a call at 2:40 p.m. that day. She was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.

"A preliminary investigation determined the deceased's injuries are indicative of having fallen down the garbage chute," a Deputy Commissioner of Public Information spokesperson shared.

"There is no criminality suspected at this time and the investigation remains ongoing."

Her cause of death has not yet been revealed, and will be determined by the medical examiner's office, per the NYPD.

According to WNBC, Elmquist was found by a building employee at the luxury residential complex in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood and was not a resident of the building.

Surveillance video shared by the outlet reportedly shows her walking down the street Thursday evening as she attempted to open doors to multiple buildings. Sources also revealed to WNBC that police are investigating if the woman's death is connected to another missing person's case.

On Friday, Elmquist's cousin shared a missing flyer to X (formerly Twitter), noting that she "left a work party in Manhattan" on Thursday and "didn’t come home or show up for work" on Friday.

Her family also shared that she was last seen getting into a yellow cab outside of a Chelsea restaurant, which is roughly 12 blocks from W 28th Street.

"Definitely wouldn't expect that at all," a resident of the building told WABC-TV. "We have great security in the building, our doors are always locked, we have lots of cameras, just honestly upsetting to hear that happened."
