'Refugees Are Welcome Here': Protesters Gather at Home Office Against Rwanda Asylum Plan

A large group of protesters gathered outside the Home Office in London on June 13 to protest the beginning of a five-year trial which will see migrants who have entered the UK illegally being flown to Rwanda to seek asylum there.

Footage recorded by the Socialist Worker shows a large group of protesters standing outside the Home Office building on Marsham Street.

Protesters can be heard chanting: “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here!”

The Rwanda scheme is part of the UK government’s New Plan for Immigration, and will see migrants who are deemed to have illegally entered the country transported to Rwanda and provided with support to remain there instead of being allowed to seek asylum in the UK.

Amnesty International has called the plan “a clear and shameful abandonment of the UK’s responsibility to refugees under the Refugee Convention.” Credit: Socialist Worker (Britain) via Storyful
