Record COVID numbers leads some French to get vaccinated

France is seeing a "tidal wave" of COVID-19 infections, with 208,000 cases reported over the past 24 hours, a new national and European record, Health Minister Olivier Veran told lawmakers on Wednesday (December 29).

France has been breaking infection records repeatedly over the past few days, with Tuesday's (December 28) 180,000 cases already the highest for a country in Europe, according to data on Covidtracker.fr.

At a vaccination centre in Meaux, near Paris, on Wednesday, many sought to get their jabs in an effort to counter the Omicron threat.

The centre administered 13,000 jabs last week, its highest tally since vaccinations began, its head Christian Allard said.
