As the saying goes, Raya sebulan (Raya lasts a month). Although, yes, it’s another toned down celebration this year no thanks to COVID-19, and you’re likely done posting your #RayaOOTD and have perhaps finished savouring (read: devouring) on your favourite Raya delights, the festivities needn’t stop.
But with eating out and large gatherings not an option right now, indulge in a la carte dishes or curated sets instead. Here are six modern Malaysian restaurants offering reimagined local flavours and delicacies. These offer takeaway, pick-up and/or delivery too, so you can have the option of dining at home safely.
ATAS Modern Malaysian Eatery
Located in the prestigious The RuMa Hotel, ATAS boasts a contemporary approach to Malaysian dining from the restaurant atmosphere to the menu. Just as local craftsmanship is incorporated into the interiors, local produce and heirloom ingredients are highlighted in the dishes conceived by Executive Chef Tyson Gee. For the festive season, expect set menus featuring reinvented traditional recipes such as ATAS Bubur Lambok, Daging Rusuk Gulai Kawah, and Terong Belado, among the highlights.

Dessert lovers shouldn’t miss the best-selling rice custard made with black custard, jackfruit, coconut flakes, and puffed rice to end your Raya meal on a satisfying note.
Helmed by award-winning celebrity Chef Wan, De.Wan 1958 is known for an array of Malaysian dishes inspired his well-loved recipes. The restaurant cum lifestyle space has developed special tiffin sets for Raya, featuring dishes such as Ketupat Palas Lemang and Ayam Kuzi that come packed in a festive-themed tiffin carrier (perfect for takeaway/delivery!). Alternatively, there’s an extensive a la carte menu to handpick your preferred dishes, with highlights including Daging Puteri Manis, Sotong Sambal Petai, and Udang Harimau Gulai Lemak Nenas Nyonya, to name a few.
Established in a century-old colonial building in Old Malaya, Manja prides itself in representing our heritage and flavours, infused with a modern culinary approach and influences from the chef’s travels. Highlighting local produce and a farm-to-table concept, the restaurant is able to ensure the quality and freshness of its dishes while championing sustainability. It also practices a ‘scratch kitchen’ concept where 90% of the food is made from scratch in its kitchen, without any artificial flavouring, colouring, or preservatives. The resulting menu features original dishes such as Sarawak Black Pepper Ribeye and Tamarind Chili Mustard Barramundi, as well as plant-based options such as Curry Leaf Portobello and Paneer & Mango.
Distinguished by opulent interiors that reflect the diversity of our local flora and fauna, OpenHouse lives up to its name as the ‘open house’ you’ll want to visit during festive seasons. The menu is no less enticing, offering a wide selection of starters, mains, sides, and desserts such as Pais Barramundi, Daging Rendang, and Pecel Salad. What’s more, the culinary team has recently worked with Jabatan Warisan Negara to reintroduce nearly extinct recipes that have been gazetted as national heritage dishes into its menu, which will be available during the festive season.
