Ray Fisher Boards ‘Women of the Movement’ Limited Series at ABC

Ray Fisher has found his latest TV role.

The “Justice League” and “True Detective” star has joined ABC’s “Women of the Movement” limited series, Variety has confirmed.

The series will tell the story of key female figures in the Civil Rights Movement, with season 1 focusing on Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, played by Adrienne Warren. Fisher will play the role of Gene Mobley, Mamie’s devoted partner. He would have been Emmett Till’s stepfather, if not for his murder. Gene and Mamie later married.

Fisher also joins previously announced cast members Cedric Joe (playing Emmett Till), Glynn Turman (playing Mose Wright, Emmett Till’s great uncle) and Niecy Nash (as Alma, Till’s grandmother).

The first season is inspired by the book “Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement” by Devery S. Anderson. The series is created by Marissa Jo Cerar, who will also serve as showrunner and executive producer. The first episode will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also executive producing.

Fisher, who is repped by Paradigm and Management 360, has made plenty of headlines recently for alleging misconduct on the “Justice League” set by director Joss Whedon and producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. Last week, WarnerMedia said it has concluded its investigation into the matter and had “taken remedial action.”

In response to WarnerMedia’s statement, Fisher commented that “there are still conversations that need to be had and resolutions that need to be found.”

Along with Cerar and Prince-Bythewood, “Women of the Movement” is being exec produced by Jay-Z, Jay Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith of Roc Nation and Will Smith and James Lassiter of Overbrook. Other executive producers include Aaron Kaplan, Dana Honor, and Michael Lohmann of Kapital Entertainment, Rosanna Grace of Serendipity Film Group, Alex Foster and John Powers Middleton of Middleton Media Group, and David Clark of Mazo Partners. Kapital Entertainment will produce.

Modi will not immediately take the vaccine himself as India is initially prioritizing 30 million nurses, doctors and others on the front line. About 270 million over 50's or those deemed high-risk will follow. Sanitation worker Manish Kumar became the first person in India to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in the country. On the first day of vaccinations, around 100 people will be voluntarily vaccinated in each of the 3,006 centre's in India. Indians won't have a choice between the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine and a government-backed, homegrown one from Bharat Biotech whose efficacy is not known. Both are being produced locally. India has reported the highest number of coronavirus infections after the United States. The country wants to vaccinate around 300 million people with two doses in the first six to eight months of the year.

My younger self, in contrast, thought of himself as a bit of a lone wolf. I was eccentric, and the other children at school really took umbrage at that. I really loved obscure role models such as Kenneth Williams and Cary Grant, and even as a small child I liked to wear a blazer and have my hair slicked back. I thought I was Noël Coward, which is an odd attitude for a child of the 1980s. I always had the sense that I was a 46-year-old trapped in a child’s life, and I felt that I should be able to go and live my grown-up life right now. And of course people were like, “No, you can’t live your life as Noël Coward. You’ve got to go and do your GCSEs.” After a time, it seemed to become more acceptable to be different. By then, I quite enjoyed the attention, so I was furious. But it was strange to have felt different from an early age. For some time, I laid it at the feet of sexuality, of being gay, yet it wasn’t anything to do with that – I wasn’t looking to find a partner when I was seven. I think it was pure eccentricity. I’ve always had a posh voice, for example, which doesn’t correlate with my family, and when people asked me why I talked like that, I’d always be like, “I don’t know.” Even so, it was frightening to be gay. There was violence perpetrated against gay people, and because of Section 28, the teachers couldn’t tell us it was fine to be gay and that there were lots of gay people. I came out when I was 21, which is quite late by today’s standards, and it felt like a big deal. I dropped it into conversation with my friends, and they carried on as normal, which was brilliant because I didn’t want to make a fuss about it. I know – can you imagine me not wanting to make a fuss?

    Astrazeneca's COVID-19 vaccine has been granted approval for emergency use in Pakistan, the country's health minister said on Saturday, the first vaccine against the disease to be given the green light in the South Asian country. "DRAP granted emergency use authorisation to AstraZeneca's COVID vaccine," Pakistan's Health Minister Faisal Sultan told Reuters, referring to the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. Pakistan is in the process of speaking to a number of vaccine makers, but this is the first local approval.

    US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed on Friday that staff at a Chinese virology laboratory became sick with a Covid-like illness in autumn 2019, months before the coronavirus spread widely from Wuhan. The day after a World Health Organization team landed in the central Chinese city on Thursday to probe the origins of the pandemic, Mr Pompeo suggested that a possible “laboratory accident” at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) merited investigation. In the final days of the administration of Donald Trump, who has been widely criticised for overseeing a disastrous pandemic response in which 393,000 Americans have died, Mr Pompeo has repeatedly sought to blame Beijing for the pandemic that has now killed over two million people worldwide. In a statement claiming to reveal previously “undisclosed information”, the State Department said it “has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses.” While acknowledging it had no definitive proof that the outbreak began in a lab, the State Department accused the Chinese Communist Party of “systematically” preventing an investigation into the pandemic’s origin. “The CCP has prevented independent journalists, investigators, and global health authorities from interviewing researchers at the WIV, including those who were ill in the fall of 2019,” it said. The arrival of the WHO investigative team was delayed by months of sensitive diplomatic negotiations. China has constructed an image as a global leader in the fight against the pandemic and there are concerns the secretive ruling party may try to restrict information that counters this narrative. Visa issues blocked the arrival of the team earlier this month, which a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry blamed on a “misunderstanding”. WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered a rare public rebuke expressing his frustration at the delay. Chinese officials barred two members of the team from boarding their flight to Wuhan after testing positive for antibodies during a layover in Singapore. The 13 members of the team who arrived are now under a two-week quarantine in Wuhan during which time they will interview Chinese experts by video link. After undergoing more testing, they plan to spend another two weeks interviewing researchers, hospital staff and workers at the Wuhan market to where the first infections were traced.
