A group of whale watchers were treated to a rare surprise when their boat came upon a pod of approximately 25 false killer whales off the coast of Dana Point, California, on March 20.
Footage taken during a whale-watching cruise organized by Capt Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari, a local company, shows the pod swimming by in a tight formation, much to the group’s delight.
“False killer whales are rarely seen off of Southern California. They typically prefer very deep, tropical, and subtropical waters,” the safari company told Storyful. “The most recent false killer whale sighting was in April 2019,” they said. Credit: Denielle Conley via Storyful
