After two weeks of silence, the Ministry of Education finally responded to allegations a Selangor teacher had made a rape joke in school.
The ministry, or MOE, announced today that the unidentified Physical Education teacher of SMK Puncak Alam has been reassigned to the Selangor Education Department amid police investigations. This comes weeks after 17-year-old high school student Ain Husniza outed the incident on TikTok, sparking widespread uproar and nationwide calls to make schools safer for students.
“Since the incident is currently under police investigation, we will not comment on it until the probe has concluded,” the statement said. “Our next course of action will be based on the results of the police probe.”
In its statement, the ministry also defended Ain’s school for threatening to expel her for being absent from classes following her viral video, which drew support as well as criticisms that made the student activist feel unsafe about returning to school, according to her father. One of the negative comments came from the school principal’s Facebook account, which the ministry said was hacked.
MOE did not comment on the rape threat Ain had also received over the video.
Regarding the school’s letter warning Ain of possible expulsion, the ministry said that the school was simply complying with standard procedures.
“If a student does not attend school for three or 10 straight days without any written justification, the teacher would issue a school absentee notice to the student’s parents or guardians,” the ministry said in the same statement. The purpose of the letter was to notify parents, it added.
Ain’s TikTok video posted last month quoted her teacher as saying: “If you want to rape someone, don’t rape those who are below 18, rape those above 18.”
Her father, Saiful Nizam, later told Coconuts that Ain did not feel safe about going back to school after receiving a rape threat from a fellow student.
An online comment posted through the principal’s account, named Aimanaizah Sarimahmohamednor, on Sunday had labeled Ain as the “spawn of Satan.”
