Raging Floodwaters Cuts Off Roadway Heavy Rain in Maui

Maui County ordered evacuations for residents living downstream of Kaupakalua Dam in Haiku on Hawaii’s Maui island to evacuated to escape flash flooding on March 8.

Jon Spenser filmed this video that shows a flooded Kaupakalua Road before he received the evacuation alert. The area was impassible and the road remained closed on Monday, according to to local news reports.

Maui County officials confirmed that Kaupakalua Dam had overflowed but found no structural damage on the dam after an inspection on March 8.

Haiku evacuees had been advised not to return until it was safe to do so. The Hawaiian islands were under a flash flood watch as deep moisture was expected to linger over the state through at least Tuesday, according to the Maui County Emergency Management Agency. Credit: Jon Spenser via Storyful
