GEORGE TOWN, April 26 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today said non-profit organisations in the state only need to pay a nominal sum of RM1 in quit rent.

He acknowledged that there had been a mistake in the quit rent bills that some 2,000 non-profit organisations had received that ran in the thousands of ringgit.

“For these lands, non-profit organisations will be given automatic deduction of quit rent if the lands were not used for profit orientated activities,” he told a news conference in his office here.

He said the RM1 applies to land used not for profit and the landowners fall under four categories, namely houses of worship, religious or welfare associations, public cemetery lands and other institutions.

“Non-profit organisations that are eligible to pay this nominal sum can ignore the bill which could be between RM1,000 and RM3,000,” he said.

He said it is being rectified but the organisations will still need to pay the nominal quit rent of RM1 from June 1 at the Land and District Office.

He said these organisations need to pay the nominal sum before June 30.
