Buckingham Palace has confirmed the death of Elizabeth II, sending the nation into mourning.
She was the longest reigning British monarch in history, celebrating her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year after 70 years on the throne.
Elizabeth became Queen in 1952 after the death of her father, George VI. There have been 14 prime ministers – from Winston Churchill to Boris Johnson – during her reign.
Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor on 21 April 1926, the then Princess Elizabeth became next in line to the throne at the age of 10 after her father became king following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII in 1936.
She became Queen at the age of 25 following her father's death on 6 February 1952.
Elizabeth and her husband Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, were in Kenya on a tour when King George VI died. Philip was the one who broke the news to her.
The Queen’s coronation took place on 2 June 1953.
Her time on the throne covered a tumultuous period in British and world history, with many highs and lows for country and the royal family.
