And her jewelry paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth.
For the first time since King Charles III ascended to the throne, he presided over the State Opening of Parliament on Tuesday. For the occasion, Queen Camilla re-wore the same dress that she debuted at the king's coronation back in May 2023, an intricate and sentimental creation by British designer Bruce Oldfield.
While re-wearing their clothes isn't unusual for the royal family — Kate Middleton and Prince William, as well as Meghan Markle, are known for giving some of their outfits multiple wears — Camilla repeating the dress puts her firmly in a royal tradition that includes the late Queen Elizabeth II.
People reports that Queen Elizabeth re-wore the coronation dress that Norman Hartnell designed for her 1953 coronation a total of six times, including at the Opening of Parliament in New Zealand, Australia, and Sri Lanka in 1954 and the Opening of Parliament in Canada in 1957. The Opening of Parliament marked the first time that Camilla re-wore the gown since the coronation.
"I think she wanted what everyone wants in a dress, that is allure," Oldfield told People of Camilla's dress, which included floral embroidery to reflect her love of nature and gardening, as well as two dogs to symbolize her rescue pups. "I design in quite a classical way, I design to flatter the body."
She also paid homage to Elizabeth by wearing the deep red velvet Robe of State to the ceremony, which can be traced back to the 15th century, as well as the George VI State Diadem, which includes 1,333 diamonds and 169 pearls and was created for King George IV's coronation in 1821. Elizabeth wore it to almost every State Opening of Parliament during her reign but switched to a lighter crown as she got older.
Camilla also added a red poppy to the white clutch she used for the day and it could be seen as she disembarked the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. The poppy is a symbol of Remembrance Day, which takes place next weekend and commemorates military members who have died during World War I. The royal family often incorporates poppies into their outfits during the month of November.
