Singapore-based Chinese actor Qi Yuwu initially felt there were “a lot of unknowns” in filming for his first Channel 5 show, the English production Missing.

Not surprising, considering the 46-year-old hails from Guangzhou, and has made a mark in local showbiz for his performances in predominantly Chinese shows.

Speaking to 8world, Qi said he was excited about his Channel 5 debut despite the uncertainty at the start.

Aside it from it being an English series, Qi also worked with acclaimed director K. Rajagopal.

Rajagopal was one of seven directors who worked on the 2015 film 7 Letters, Singapore’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

In 2016, his film A Yellow Bird was screened at the International Critics' Week section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Coincidentally, Qi realised that he had already watched some of the director’s films when he was trying to familiarise himself with his previous works.

On the experience, Qi shared, “I felt that there were a lot of unknowns when I started. The biggest was working with an Indian director. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what the process was going to be… He’s an arts film director, and I’m filming [an English show], I feel that it’s a pretty new thing to try.

“I’m really curious and excited to see what we’ll make together and what kind of result we’ll get.”

As for his working relationship with the director, Qi said it was comfortable despite this being their first collaboration together, and hopes they can work together again.

Missing is a thriller television miniseries set in the 80s. It has a total of five episodes, with each episode’s runtime being around 25 minutes.

Qi said the project was “attractive” to him as there was “a lot of space for improvisation in this era”.

“I feel that it’s a special project,” he added.

In the show, Qi and his co-star Jeanette Aw play a married couple. The duo have acted alongside each other before in previous productions like The Little Nyona (2008) and The Dream Makers (2013).

He said, “Though personally, we don’t have a lot of contact with each other, but every time we meet and collaborate, there’s still a lot of chemistry. This feeling can’t be forced.”
