Qatar World Cup chaos as fans surge into holding area before kick-off
Chaos erupted on the first day of the World Cup in Qatar with thousands of fans surging into a holding area for supporters. Footage shows the crammed scene at the FIFA Fan Festival outside the Al Bidda Park in Doha on Sunday night (November 20) an hour before the hosts played Ecuador. Police at the 40,000-capacity venue struggled to cope when around double the number of people reportedly tried to force their way in. Many were let into a holding area between the main festival park and the perimeter entrance. Onlooker Liz Franciely said: "There was absolute chaos at the Fifa fan festival, no order and adults and kids getting hurt in what could have been a stampede. It was not OK".
