PUTRAJAYA, Dec 23 — The federal government has agreed to lower the tariffs applied on gas facilities for the Second Regulatory Period starting next January 1, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced this evening.

The decision was reached during Wednesday's weekly Cabinet meeting, Rafizi said at a press conference here. The natural gas industry is widely expected to benefit from the tariff reduction.

“The decreased average tariff of gas facilities for the RP2 period is expected to provide savings in terms of energy costs to the industry. Depending on the volume of gas consumption, this reduction in the average tariff of gas facilities is projected to translate into savings,” he said.

The policy decision will affect regasification facilities owned by Pengerang LNG (Two) Sdn Bhd and gas distribution pipeline owned by Petronas Gas Bhd.

The move would save between RM5.5 million and RM33.2 million for companies in the delivery segment and up to RM55.9 million for the distribution segment of the industry in 2023, according to the minister's estimates.
